New York State Facts and Figures
- Approximately 1.1 million people — that ’s 7.7% of New York’s
population — are estimated to have diagnosed diabetes. Another
450,000 New Yorkers with type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed.
- Up to 45% of all newly diagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes occur
in children. Until a few years ago, type 2 diabetes was rarely
seen in people younger than 40.
- Minorities are disproportionately affected by diabetes.
- In New York City, the prevalence of diabetes diagnosis are:
• 11.3% of Puerto Ricans
• 9.0% non-Hispanic black
• 6.7% Latino
• 5.3% non-Hispanic white
- Lower extremity amputation increased from 6.9 to 7.1 procedures per 1,000 people with diabetes in 2000.
- End-stage renal disease has risen significantly to 10.7 cases per 1,000 people with diabetes.
- Only 56% of people with diabetes check their blood glucose daily.
