Diabetes can damage the kidneys because high levels of blood sugar
cause them to filter too much blood. Kidneys filter waste products
from the blood stream, and if the kidneys begin to break down,
they are no longer able to efficiently filter the blood. This can
lead to the need for dialysis (a machine that filters the blood)
or end stage renal disease.
